Meet The Board: Mike Flanagan

Get to know our board members
We’ve really received a lot of positive feedback on Get to Know Our Board, where we’ll shine a spotlight on the incredible volunteer board members who help keep Circle City FC moving forward.
These are the people working behind the scenes—giving their time, energy, and expertise—to support our players, families, and coaches and to help shape the future of our club. In each post, we’ll introduce you to one board member, share a bit about who they are, what they do, and why they’re passionate about Circle City FC, so you can get to know the faces and stories behind the club you’re a part of.
Today, we introduce you to Mike Flanagan, our Rec Director.
q: What is your current board position and role at circle city fc?
I am the Rec Director. I pair the coaches to the corresponding team, build the rec schedule, and set the picture day schedule for teams. So if there are any issues you can come yell at me, haha. If we are short coaches I reach out to look for more. Once the season starts I just make sure everything is going smooth for our players, volunteer coaches, and families. If any issues arise, I try to work through the issue with them.
q: When did you join the ccfc board?
2015
q: What inspired you to get involved with the club?
Same as my wife hearing "Are you ready to join yet?" from another fun and friendly board member. After talking with him and seeing how much joy he had I decided to give it a try.
q: What's the most rewarding part of serving on the board?
Seeing all the kids and families out there. Hearing the great words of "We love it here!", "Thanks for all you do." Hearing that stuff makes definitely makes the long days/weekends worth it. Knowing how big of a impact we are making in the community. Plus knowing we are the #1, 100% volunteer-run club in the state of Indiana sure feels nice too.
q: What's one thing families might be surprised to learn about running a youth soccer club?
It takes a village to make it successful. A few hours here or there definitely help. You don't know how much it helps us board members to direct some of our attention to other things even if you are running the golf carts for us. Give what you can back, however small you may think it is, and it will go far for us.
q: Why do you believe community involvement and volunteer leadership matter in youth sports?
We are the backbone of youth sports. If we don't have enough people that donate their time the league wouldn't succeed. It takes all us from the board members to coaches and team parents.
q: What would you say to someone considering getting involved with the club?
DO IT. It might seem scary at first but you will enjoy it. Knowing the joy it brings the families each weekend. Honestly, I wish I would have done it sooner.
q: What is your favorite soccer memory?
Favorite memory coaching is when I was able to coach both my girls and my niece. Seeing the excitement they have playing the game. As a spectator it is seeing the kids get so excited when they score their first goal ever. Hearing "Hey Coach" from kids I have coached in the past or hearing "Hey that is the guy that wears the tutus". I will do anything to make the game fun for the kids.
q: What soccer club (other than ccfc) do you support?
US Women's National team, Washington Spirit (Trinity Rodman), Gotham FC (Rose Lavelle), Chicago Red Stars (Mallory Swanson), and Portland Thorns (Sophia Smith)
